Clean Community System received Grant from Keep America Beautiful for Downtown Grand Island
Keep America Beautiful, the nation’s iconic community improvement nonprofit organization, today announced that Grand Island Area Clean Community System will receive a Cigarette Litter Prevention Program Grant of $2,500 to combat cigarette litter in the downtown area of Grand Island.
Clean Community System is one of 42 organizations to receive grant funding through the 2018 Cigarette Litter Prevention Program. The 2017 Cigarette Litter Prevention Program grant funding totaled $295,000. The Cigarette Litter Prevention Program, now in its 16th year, is the nation’s largest program aimed at reducing cigarette litter. Throughout its history, the program has helped reduce cigarette litter in the communities in which it has been implemented by an average of 50 percent.
Denise McGovern-Gallagher, Executive Director stated “Clean Community System is very excited to be a recipient of this grant. We will be working with the Downtown Improvement Board, staff, local businesses, and the City of Grand Island to facilitate the installation of new cigarette butt containers by June 1st.”

The timing for this grant coincides perfectly with all the new activities and growth currently going on in the Downtown area. We are appreciative of Clean Community System taking on a project such as this,” stated Marlan Ferguson, City Administrator.
